Men Can Also Get Thyroid Disorder: Warning Signs

Although thyroid disorders are more common in women, they can also affect men. What you need to know about the symptoms and indicators is provided here.

When we think of thyroid problems, they are often associated with women. However, thyroid disorders are not exclusive to women—men can also be affected. The thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped organ in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy, mood, and overall health. When it malfunctions, it can lead to either hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

Ignoring thyroid issues can have serious consequences for men, including hormonal imbalance, infertility, and cardiovascular problems. Recognizing the warning signs early can make a big difference.

Common Warning Signs of Thyroid Disorders in Men

1. Unexplained Fatigue and Low Energy

Men with hypothyroidism often feel unusually tired, even after proper rest. This constant fatigue is due to a slowed metabolism and reduced energy production.

2. Sudden Weight Changes

Unexplained weight gain may point to hypothyroidism, while sudden weight loss despite normal eating habits may signal hyperthyroidism. Both conditions disturb metabolic balance.

3. Hair Loss and Skin Problems

Thinning hair, premature balding, dry skin, or brittle nails may be linked to an underactive thyroid. These changes occur due to nutrient absorption issues and poor blood circulation.

4. Mood Swings and Depression

Thyroid imbalances directly affect brain chemistry. Men may experience irritability, anxiety, or even depression without a clear cause, often misattributing it to stress.

5. Decreased Sexual Health and Fertility Issues

Low thyroid function can reduce testosterone levels, leading to decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and even reduced sperm count. This is one of the most overlooked signs in men.

6. Heart-Related Symptoms

Hyperthyroidism may cause rapid heartbeat, palpitations, and high blood pressure, while hypothyroidism can slow down the heartbeat, increasing the risk of heart disease.

7. Swelling in the Neck (Goiter)

An enlarged thyroid gland can appear as a lump or swelling at the base of the neck. This visible sign should never be ignored, as it can indicate a serious thyroid problem.

Why Men Often Ignore Thyroid Symptoms

Men are less likely than women to seek medical help for symptoms like tiredness, mood swings, or low libido, often assuming these are age-related. This delay in diagnosis can worsen the condition.

When to See a Doctor

If you experience two or more of the above warning signs, consult a doctor for a thyroid function test. Simple blood tests can detect imbalances, and with proper treatment, thyroid disorders can be effectively managed.

Final Word

Thyroid disorders are not just a “women’s health issue.” Men too can be affected, often with serious consequences if ignored. By recognizing the early warning signs—such as fatigue, weight changes, sexual health issues, or mood disturbances—men can take timely action to protect their health and well-being.
